Child Parent Relationship Therapy

Picture

CPRT / Filial Therapy

Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT, Landreth, 1991; Landreth & Bratton, 2006, 2020) is a 10 week play-based treatment program for children presenting with behavioral, emotional, social, and attachment disorders. Through building a secure parent- child relationship the child is in turn able to grow and have their needs met.  Parents learn play therapy skills to respond more effectively to their children's emotional and behavioral needs, which in turn, children learn that they can count on their parents to reliably and consistently meet their needs (Bratton & Landreth 2020).

Who is it for?

CPRT was created to increase the relationship between parent and child and strengthen the quality of the relationship, thus in turn reducing child behavior struggles an stress within the parent-child relationship. Parents are taught how to establish secure attachment with their children and help them respond to underlying needs rather than focusing on symptoms. Parents also learn how to effectively set boundaries or limits on their children's misbehavior while showing empathy and respect for their child (Landreth & Bratton 2020).
-Can be used for children 2.5 and up, typically adapted for preteens to meet more appropriate developmental needs.
-Helpful for parents struggling to communicate or connect with their child.
-Parents struggling with discipline or behavioral concerns at home.
-Parents with children who struggle with separation anxiety or any major changes within the family.
- Parents of children with special needs.
- Parents with children of children who are adopted or have attachment disorders.
- Parents with children struggling with emotional concerns.

Research

CPRT is well researched therapeutic parenting model with numerous studies investigating its effectiveness with a history dating back almost two decades. The evidence around the studies and methods continues to grow as the years have gone on. More information can be found here.
