New Year, New You, or Do You

I don't know about you, but my social media has been ablaze with not only advertisements for joining gyms or setting new intentions or starting a new bullet journal or creating a whole new lifestyle for myself. Not only that but there are people, friends, family, and trend setters telling everyone what they should be doing or what new program they are on. You know what? That is really cool and awesome that these people have made a commitment to create change and are wanting to manifest something positive in their lives. You know what else? It is also ok if you don't.  Some people can create these goals for themselves and accomplish them and it works and man does it feel so freaking awesome when you come out on the other side and look back and go, "Hey, I did the thing." On the flip side, you might feel guilt and shame because you did not accomplish said goal. Say you set something out for yourself last year that did not pan out or maybe you put this goal on yourself that fits into this headspace that is unrealistic and you end up beating yourself at the end of it. All of these things can lead to anxiety or depressed feelings.
Here is another idea for the New year. It is another day and year. You can just continue to be you, take small steps, and celebrate those. Did you just finish that really big project you were working on? High five, yo! Finally get 8 hours of sleep? Who needs coffee? Oh me... and that is still OK. Maybe this year is the year to give yourself some grace and that is all you need to grow. Who knows maybe progress will happen without a goal. Try this: Gratitude instead of goals perhaps? Ex: I am happy I have friends who love me and make me laugh. I have great hair. I am really awesome at art, etc.. This might not work for everyone, so I leave you with this: set goals, set intentions, color, dance, work out, sleep, use gratitude, do nothing, or you do you.
